How To Reduce Your Waste Mountain
The 1WORLD team have put together some of their
favourite, no cost, waste busting tips to help you reduce your waste mountain.
- Pack school lunches in a reusable box rather than foil or cling film.
- Buy whenever and wherever possible loose fruit & veg.
- Forget- They may be "convenient" but say no to the disposable nappy.
- Reuse your old carrier bags or better still invest in one of the growing number of
environmentally friendly bags for life.
- Compost - If you have a garden why not put all your green waste to good use or invest
in a wormery your garden will thrive on it and your kids will love it to.
- Harvest - If you can why not harvest your rainwater and use it to water your garden.
- Invest - Yes invest in a proper pen every biro or plastic pen that is dumped will
remain there for 50,000 years!
- Switch - if you solder make it lead free.
- Forget the staple - If we all use 1 staple less we would save an almighty 120 tonnes
of steel!
- Recycle your old printer cartridges - Every year we dump over 2 million old printer
cartridges.
- Having a party? Forget the paper plate invest in some of todays highly stylish alternatives.
- Avoid plastic cups - these are bad for the environment - Every year vending machines
dispense over 3 billion of them
- Buy - Make sure that the wood you buy carries the FSC logo or comes from a sustainable
source - Help put an end to illegal logging.
- Donate - Yes donate because your junk could be someone elses treasure.
- Swap - why not throw a clothes swap shop, not only are they great fun you get some
great new clothes at a fraction of the cost.
- Refill - If you want to help save our planet reuse your old plastic bottles - keep
them in the fridge or freezer for instant cold drinks.
- Switch - Invest in rechargeable batteries - in the long run it will help save you
money and will help reduce a burgeoning toxic problem.
- Ban the drip. If you have a dripping tap in the house, replace the washer inside
it. One drop every second results in an almighty 2,700 gallons of water a year.
- Remember the old adage, you are what you eat! Reducing the quantity of food that
we place on our plates every day could help us lose weight and help us to reduce
the amount of waste food that currently goes to our overflowing landfill sites!
